A Daily Rate by Grace Livingston Hill

A sweet and wholesome romance

Celia’s eyes danced as she said demurely she was very glad. As she went back to the kitchen with the dishes, she could not help thinking what handsome eyes that man had, and how they were lit up by his smile. He was tall and thin with an intellectual face which many persons would have called homely, but of the style which Celia always designated to herself and aunt Hannah as “homely handsome.”

The new boarder went out after his meal was finished. He had told his landlady that he would bring his belongings when he returned later in the evening, and she had promised to have his room ready for him.

Celia went upstairs to see if she could do anything. She was bubbling over with delight over the house and its inmates and all she wished to do. No child in a fairy tale ever had such delightful possibilities put into her hands, she thought, as had been given to her.

I've enjoyed reading books by Grace Livingston Hill for years, & was quite surprised to find A Daily Rate for Kindle. I loved it! GLH has a unique way of writing; it is old-fashioned, quaint, innocent. She is a Christian, & her books reflect her faith.
I enjoyed the beautiful story of a young woman who lives in a decrepit old boarding house. Through a twist of fate she winds up buying the old house & bringing her aunt to help her run it. With lots of "soap & elbow grease" they transform it into a cozy home that the boarders may enjoy.
There's a little romance towards the end of the book. I appreciate the innocence portrayed; I am so tired of modern fiction with its obligatory graphic casual sex.
All in all, I really enjoyed this beautiful book. I felt good inside when I read it.

This is a delightful tale of an older woman mentoring younger women into faith, healthy thinking & maturity. It brings to life the instructions of Titus 23-5 in novel form. Very timely for me as I have been pondering & attempting to apply that passage to my own life lately. Another favorite from Grace Livingston Hill!
We often question why! Yet with God it is possible to know He is in charge of this world and the Bible testifies of his words, love and care for us on a second, minute, hour, day by day shows he is in control of this world. Nothing can happen to us that He doesn't allow for our growth and learning and to bring us home to Him when our work here is done.
Grace Livingston Hill tells such great moral stories! Her writing style for the most part is simple, straightforward and gentle. She is sharing a story like it could be a memory she has that she wants you to know about. When my mind is cluttered with the details of the world we live in, I like to read her stories. It reminds me that the important things, like Christian devotion, good/evil, love/commitment are still simple and straightforward issues. This story of a young girl coming into some inheritance money is a good example of her work. She had a gift for making a great little read to make a moral point.
A girl is separated from a beloved aunt by a death in the family. She has to leave home to work as a ribbon girl at a city department store and her aunt has to keep house for selfish and demanding relatives. This story tells of how these two are brought back together to undertake "missionary" work in a decrepit boarding house by making it a home based on Christian beliefs. The story of Aunt Hannah's first day in charge of the boarding house is one of my all-time favorites. Of course, there is also a romantic plot that has some twists and tangles. I really enjoyed this book and have read it several times. Grace Livingston Hill writes about different times but her themes are timeless and unlike today, there is no gratuitous sex or any violence in this book. If you have read other books by Mrs. Hill, you know what to expect. If this is your first, I wish you joy and hope it is the first of many that you read.
What is it like to live each day, each moment filled with the knowledge of God's love? This timeless classic is filled with a depth of belief and cultivation of surrender to God's loving plan for lives. It follows the
love of a young woman and her aunt undergoing hard times early in the nineteen hundreds, but while the times are different, the message is needed today. I reread this book when life seems hard, and it inspires me.
Been reading GL Hill for many years & somehow missed this one. As it happens it was perfect for me right now. Of course all is 'set' in the early 1900's so you'd think it was 'dated' but each character is so like "someone I know" because she understood people & God's love for them. My life is very different from those in the story and yet the conclusions are timeless. II Kings 2530 is not a verse I've ever heard mentioned in a sermon ... but oh my I enjoyed this little book and walked away blessed, and just a little more reminded that I, too, have a "daily rate" so I don't have to worry about tomorrow today.
Celia Murray is one of the few characters from Grace Livingston Hill I've read who actually has doubts about her faith and questions her need to help people, because of this she's more realistic than some of the other ladies in some of her books. She has bad days just like the rest of us and doubts her ability to behave as God would want her to.

It's nice to read about someone who has some of the same faults that I do. I liked the characters in this book, the other people in the boarding house and how, with the encouragement and guidance of her Aunt Hannah, they are able to do some of the missionary work that Aunt Hannah originally wanted to dedicate her life to.

This was a quick read, very interesting and well written, there were a few typos that required thought because they were actual words. For the price they weren't a problem.

Ms. Hill used the plot of girls who worked in deparmtne stores in a lot of her books, although there are several this was a good story about regular people, no one was rich and the all worked for a living. I highly recommend this book for readers who like Ms. Hill.
