Is science really incompatible with religion? I don't think so in general although there are differing beliefs as to how the universe got started and how humans arrived on earth. To me God is the ultimate scientist and we living here on earth discover the beauty of his laws and wonder at the stars and planets.It is with that said that I feel I've gone back in time while reading this book. It is a book that authors from the 1800s reference. So I thought I'd give it a try. It seems secular scientists and Christians are still arguing about the same things. It is however great to see some of the arguments laid out and to understand the scientific principles discovered back in the 1800s. So for historical purposes this might be fun to read. I found it a bit heavy on science and yet the religious portions brimmed with enthusiasm and life.
There is a discussion of heaven and hell and also many comments about Christ's words of life. Basically this book comes to the conclusion that life can't come from non-life so therefore must come from the unseen universe. If you've read the Bible and believe its contents then on this you will easily agree. If you crave a life beyond the grave you may find some fascinating topics here.
At the start of the book religions of the past are described and you can see how humans found there way to current beliefs. What struck me as very urgent and essential was the following comment: "take away all hope of a future state...the effect upon humanity would be simply disastrous." I do not think some humans think deeply about what would happen if humans stopped desiring eternal life. The hope that would be lost would be immeasurable and I think many would give up on life itself. Because without the hope of heaven people would have nothing to look forward to in the next life. So I find teachings that say we are just going to die and that is the end, to be hope deprived. Those types of beliefs do not make me happy.
On the other hand, learning more about Christ and his words of life...that makes me happy. He has conquered death for us and promises us eternal life in the beyond. Dogmatists will of course try to dissuade you from your hope and do not consider evidence from others on the topic. They will laugh and deride you, mock you and present much unbelief. But hold firm in your beliefs about heaven, for many have been there and many have come back to tell us about their near-death experiences. Millions can't be wrong on this, it is becoming too wide spread and is completely intriguing.
So this book is a bit long winded but you will gain something eternal from reading it. I have read other books that are easier to read on scientific theology but this is a classic I think serious students of science and religion can read for a few hours and gain some unique perspectives. It took me a few days to read but I'm happy I took the chance and went for it.

This book is perfectly satisfactory if, like me, you don't want to sit in front of your computer for hours reading the many free versions available online. That said, there are a few errors. This is the 1901 edition of "Unseen Universe," and is missing the interesting Prefaces that I know are in the 1st through the 4th editions (1875-1876). There are also some errors in the footnotes (at least one of them is missing). That said, it's perfectly readable, and since I often use this book as a reference in my work, I enjoyed having a print copy I could turn to.
